Improper backpack use, poor posture
and contact sports can cause spinal

In addition to birth trauma, falls, sports injuries and poor posture, improperly used backpacks are one of the most common causes of spinal misalignment and pain in older children. We offer educational programs on backpack safety from time to time, but here are some tips to get you started:

1. Select a light backpack with two wide, padded straps and a padded back.

2. Do not carry more than ten to fifteen percent of your body weight in a backpack.

3.Always use both shoulder straps to carry a backpack.Carrying a heavy backpack or purse on one shoulder can cause problems over time.

4. Put heavier items in the center of the backpack on the side that is closer to your body.

5. Use your locker or desk for storage so you don’t have to carry all of your books all day.

6. When picking up your backpack, bend and lift with your legs, not with your back.
