Preventing Sports Injuries -- Traumatic Injuries

Many sprains, muscle strains, fractures and other injuries can be prevented by following these simple tips:


1. Follow the coaches’ rules for safety and the rules of the sport.

2. Wear the correct protective equipment.  This may include helmets, padding, shin guards, and eye and mouth guards.  And remember that protective equipment only works if it fits properly, is well-maintained and is worn consistently and correctly. 

3. Use the same precautions in practice that you would at a game.  Most traumatic sports injuries (62 percent) occur during practice, partly because 33 percent of parents and athletes report that they do not take the same safety precautions during practice that they would during a game.

4. Practice good sportsmanship at all times.
