4th Annual Beat the Heat Walk/Run A SUCCESS!

The streets were covered with splashes of color when the second annual Beat the Heat One Mile Walk/Run took place in Williamsburg on Friday, August 2, 2013.  Well over 200 participants, ranging in age from one-year-old to seventy-six-years old, came to downtown Williamsburg for the one-mile event which was presented by Christopher Chiropractic.

Runners and walkers were encouraged to come dressed in white and they finished the course covered in splashes of life-brightening color.  The color for this family-friendly event came in the form of several hundred pounds of food-grade corn starch with non-toxic coloring agents mixed into it.  The colored powder was dispersed in strategic places along the race route.  Approximately 100 volunteers were on hand to ensure that all participants safely finished the race covered in color.

Dr. Elizabeth Christopher indicates that the race yielded a profit of approximately $2,000.  These funds will be used to purchase air conditioners for needy families in Whitley County.  Half of the proceeds will be used to purchase air conditioners to be distributed by the Bell-Whitley Community Action Agency, a Nonprofit organization works to improve the lives of people in Bell and Whitley counties.

The remainder of the race proceeds will be used to purchase a central air conditioning unit for the next house built by the University of the Cumberlands’ Mountain Outreach ministry.
The award for the fastest male which went to Garrett Faulkner for finishing the race in four minutes and forty-five seconds.  The fastest female time belonged to Shelly Scheithauer, who crossed the finish line with a time of six minutes and twenty-four seconds.
