How Do I Know If I Need To See A Chiropractor? Posture

Although we at Christopher Chiropractic strive to get our patients better in only a few visits and then discharge them from care, I'm sure you have heard that some chiropractors want to see you "three times a week for the rest of your life."  Indeed, one of my patients once called his former chiropractor the "Come Back Kid".  When I asked him what he was talking about, he said, "Well, for over a year every time I saw that chiropractor regardless of how I felt as I left he always told me to 'come back' in a few days, so I call him the 'Come Back Kid'."

Although we operate very differently in our practice,  I do see where the chiropractor might have been coming from.  After all, the only sure-fire way to know if you have a stuck joint is to see a chiropractor.  However, this blog series is intended to give patients who are interested in "preventative care" some things that that they can do quickly and for free at home to determine if they are more likely have a stuck joint that our doctors need to correct.  By doing so, they don't need to come in every day to get checked but they are still more likely to catch the problem before it causes major symptoms or complications if the stuck joint stresses the nearby muscles or nerves for too long.

This week's home test is as easy as standing in front of a full length mirror or having a partner examine your posture.  You simply close your eyes, take a deep breath, and take a couple of steps in place.  Once you finish this you simply open your eyes and observe your posture without allowing yourself to "correct" any problems that you see.  Here's what you look for:

Are You Standing Straight?  Draw an imaginary line straight through your body from top to bottom.  The line should pass through your nose, chin, belly button and down to the mid-point between your feet.  That line should be straight and perpendicular to the ground.  If you aren't standing straight or if your entire body is leaning to one side you may have a stuck joint that your chiropractor needs to fix.

Are Your Ears Level?  Draw an imaginary line through your ears.  That line should be parallel to the ground.  If the line is out of balance and your head is tilted to one side or the other, you may have a stuck joint that a chiropractor needs to fix.

Are Your Shoulders Level? Draw an imaginary line through your shoulders. That line should be parallel to the ground. If the line is out of balance and your shoulders are tilted to one side or the other, you may have a stuck joint that a chiropractor needs to fix.

Are Your Hips Level?  Draw an imaginary line through your hips. That line should be parallel to the ground. If the line is out of balance and your shoulders are tilted to one side or the other, you may have a stuck joint that a chiropractor needs to fix.

As you do these tests remember that your body is unique and you may not have "average" posture that we describe above.  Some folks have one leg that is slightly shorter than another or have a slight scoliosis or other conditions that can impact their "normal" posture.  Regardless of what your "normal" is, it should be pretty easy to establish what your posture is like right after you have been adjusted and you are free of chiropractic misalignments. Once you do that, you can compare yourself to your "normal" posture.  If your "normal" posture changes, it is probably a good time to get checked by a chiropractor, even if you don't feel any pain yet.
